As of February 10, the movie which has been garnering international attention, “RUST” is now shooting up a storm in Kipling! (And shooting through its share of them, as well.) Despite a freak blizzard which piled up more snow than most residents could remember in a single dump, the crew ploughed its way through closed highways in the attempts to make the first day of shooting. Cancelled flights, de-railings into ditches, and massive snow drifts left drivers stuck left and right, but didn’t stop the scheduled first day of principal photography from commencing.

The prior night, after a stream of cancelled flights, Director, Corbin Bernsen, was forced back to Calgary after hovering over Regina; and was only finally able to land the morning of the first day. He then ploughed his way through the treacherous road conditions the final 150 kilometer stretch, to the shock of all who witnessed. Driven by his drive to make the best movie he can, Corbin was also fueled by tight time constraints and tighter budgets. From the grand-scale equipment trucks to the little cars transporting essential key crew members, the filmmakers dug their way out of the trenches to reach their destination, but with time and resources now stretched to their tightest.

Since then, shooting has indicated struggles to be worthwhile. Braving not only the elements, but the challenge of training new talent on a budget at a fraction of even the minimum typical movie-making standards, Kipling has, regardless, seen filmmaking in grand capacities – featuring Hollywood star, Corbin Bernsen, Corner Gas famed, Lorne Cardinal, the latest in “Red Camera” technology (PS Production Services) as well as a fleet of trucks full of top-notch equipment, (William F. White International). Scenes shot so far have thus featured high-caliber recorded drama. Showcasing the rising local talent of Kipling’s inhabitants, this heart-warming story features a minister on the road to recover his faith, returning to his hometown for Christmas in the hopes of rekindling. There, he must also make sense of the aftermath of a tragedy which confronts him upon his arrival; his childhood friend has confessed to the crime of burning down a house which has taken the lives of the family within.

The shooting of the house-burning scene provided some relief from the cold temperatures, but since then, minus 30 degree dips are proving a challenge to the equipment, cast and crew alike. LA Producer, Chris Aronoff acknowledged, “We’ve had to deal with some pretty harsh weather conditions, but thanks to the efforts of the crew and the town of Kipling, not only have we proceeded in making the film, but it’s thriving.”

Due to the generous efforts of the makers, crew, cast, residents of the town, SCN, and SaskFilm, as well as local sponsors: More Than Just Flowers, McMillians, Manns Foods, Seedhawk, Gee Bee Construction, Kipling Fire Department, Bakers Small Engine Repair, and Supreme Oil fields, Kipling residents are seeing their investment in full motion. The town is taking their first step in motion-picture making at full sprint. Planned to take place at the finish line will be the World Premiere in Kipling, to screen after the completion of post production around Christmas time this year.

Anyone interested in appearing in the film or helping to make this endeavor the best representation of your renowned town spirit, feel free to contact our production office at (306) 736-2220. Help in any capacity goes great distances towards success in this unprecedented effort.

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

AND ACTION!!!
         A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
OF “RUST” CORBIN BERNSEN

Hello Kipling!

Well at long last we are about to make our movie! I believe “Rust” is a fantastic first movie for Kipling. It has a message of faith and hope and its writing was influenced greatly by your generosity and kind spirit.

You’ll see my team and I in town starting pre production on January 28th and going into production (actual filming) starting on February 10. Almost every scene in the movie will be shot in and around Kipling and Main Street. Actors and Actresses are from Kipling and surrounding area. Our production office will be at the Legion Hall and open on or about February 4.

But the work has only begun. We are the “little train that could,” and we’ll continue to need your help along the way. To that end I’m enclosing a FIRST LIST of needs for the movie.

My hope is to update you at least twice a week for the next month or so in this manner to not only let you know where we are at, but ask for your continued help with items needed for the film AS WELL AS your bodies! That is we need EXTRAS for many, many of the scenes. And yes, that means you’ll be in the movie!

We are set for tons of fun and a GREAT PROJECT! You have a chance to be part of the FUN. Imagine being able to tell your grandchildren that you had a part in making a film in Kipling! Check the list below. Decide what you, your family, or your organization may be in a position to donate (or have used at a really low price). The fewer number of items that need to be rented or hired, the more chance there is that the film will be a monetary success. It is the intention of KFP to set up a data base that can be tapped as needed. As you will see, some of the items are solid physical items, while others are more of a service nature.

List of locations:
- Production Office Space – this needs to be large enough for various departments to headquarter. It should have high speed internet connection and phone service.
- Other Locations
o Old church (near an open field)
o Newer church with a cross on top – not necessarily in the country.
o Farmhouse that could be filmed – both exteriors and interiors.
o Old farmhouse that could be burned.
o Jail Facility
o Sheriff’s office
o City building and corridor
o School auditorium
o Exterior of High School Gym
o Interior of High School gym
o Coach’s office
List of equipment:
- Office Equipment – phones, computers, fax machines, heavy duty copy machines.
- Heaters – to be used at various locations during filming.
- Vehicles and Drivers
o Cast and Crew Transportation – several passenger vans.
o Dressing Rooms – 3 to 5 RVs to be used as Cast dressing rooms and on-set production offices.
o Warming Spot – a large bus(es) for crew to warm up in.
o Cube Vans – 3 medium to large to transport gear from and back to Regina.
o Police cars – 2 to 3 to be in the film.
o Truck – a 10 to 15 year old reliable truck for Corbin’s character to use in the film.
o Vintage vehicles – 10 to 15 vehicles from the 1960s for flashback scenes.
o Crane to be used periodically for cameras and for lighting.
- Generators
- Set Decorations – we would ask that everyone in town leave their Christmas decorations up for the January/February filming. More decorations may be needed to make Main Street extra festive.
- Wardrobe – clothing from current era as well as from the 1960s.
List of people:
- General volunteers – duties will be varied and may interest people of all ages.
- Carpenters
- Painters
- Electrician – to access power as needed.
- Crowd Control
- Hockey Players – 2 teams (at this time, Corbin has not indicated the age levels).
- Football Players
- Younger (Little League) Baseball Players for summer shoot.
- Girls’ Basketball Team
- Young Childrens’ Choir – approx. 7 – 12 years old.
- Production Assistants – approximately 5 young people who are willing to be runners for the different departments.
- Someone to be liaison – Corbin needs to have someone who can spend the time that he will be in Kipling making sure that the local people who have said they can help are actually there. This will be in short shots of time, dependent upon what the filming schedule is.
- Catering – usually there are two meals in a day, the first, no matter what time the start is called breakfast, the second called lunch occurring six hours after beginning for the day. The work for this may not all be from one group, but perhaps such that one group does breakfasts, another does lunches or one group takes on three days, another group three days, etc. Flexibility could certainly prevail.
- Craft Services- this is a snack table near the set. This would be responsible for having soup/sandwiches available several times during the day and having coffee, tea, etc. available at all times.

While it is our hope that there will be no need to pay for many of the local needs of the film, credits will be given for the assistance given.

In order to get a data base to fill these needs, it is important that people respond quickly. This can be done by contacting Moose Mountain Central Development Office at Phone 736-8399, Fax 736-8412, or email moose.mtn.centralrdc@sasktel.net . Please contact as soon as possible with your list of items/services. We would appreciate a reply by November 13, 2008. Thanks for being interested. GET INVOLVED! HAVE SOME FUN! When James left just over thirty years ago - right after high school and the sudden death of his mother - he was highly regarded, “a hometown hero,” star athlete with tremendous opportunities coming in from all corners of the country. Instead of exploiting those opportunities however, and much to the surprise and disappointment of family and friends, he passed it all up; the money and fame, choosing instead to quietly move away, far away and study the Bible and make a life doing “God’s work.” For all the years in between he’s moved around the country, an Ordained Minister, selflessly preaching the word of Christ. For some reason however, and again to the surprise of friends and family, his trips home were mysteriously few and far between. Then thirty years later, out of the blue, James woke up one day, literally, and suddenly found himself in a midlife crisis… OF FAITH! With a world in increasing turmoil, and so much tragedy, natural and man-made, his faith in God and Christ had suddenly vanished! Afraid of what he might discover, and with an aching heart, he decided to return to his roots and search for the buried clues of his discontent. While he didn’t expect open arms, he knew he had disappointed too many, it home -coming even worse than he could have imagined. For openers, his father Glen, a lifelong farmer, is now much older and with that more bitter and angrier than ever. And it’s not that the season’s crops were decimated by a Rust disease, or that farming was down in general and the cost of doing business was skyrocketing, those both exist…no, what really has the old man fuming is that he feels that James has squandered every opportunity that life has presented him, never finishing anything. “Every seed you’ve planted, everything you’ve put in the ground, including your mother, has yielded you nothing, not a single fruit has come to bear. You’ve got nothing to show for your years. And that’s not my fault, not your mother’s fault, and certainly not God’s fault,” he scolds his son. Elsewhere, James’ younger sister Mary, who was only 14 when her brother ran from town, also has her problems. Her husband has left her for a younger woman, having his own more traditional mid life crisis. But none of that compares to the real problem in town! James returns home on the heels of a terrible tragedy that lingers over the place like a dark cloud without a breeze of hope that it will move on. A prominent farming family has perished in a deadly, early autumn fire, burning their farmhouse to the ground. And as if that weren’t enough, a challenged local man, Travis, who in the same breath is loved yet also somewhat of a “shame” for the town, has admitted to setting the fire in revenge against the farmer who was a major proponent of “putting him away and throwing away the key.” For James this is a tragedy of epic proportions as Travis, who now sits in jail, headed for a terrible future, was also his best friend growing up, the water boy for the football team, the guy that would always prop him up when the going got tough. James, to say the least, is as confused as ever. This does nothing to help him find his way back to Christ. In fact it is further evidence of a world upside-down and deepens his crisis of faith even more. If James is disappointed, the town is even more disappointed. If ever they needed someone to guide them, give them hope, restore the faith, it is now. And their “hometown hero,” who once abandoned them to do God’s work – which all finally resolved in their heart – has returned home unable to do the very thing they need, give them that hope, that faith, the thing he left them for. Many like Glen now see James as someone who runs from life’s problems – never living up to his potential. As autumn turns to winter, James can’t come to grips with the fact that Travis has done this terrible thing. It just doesn’t sit right. When he suggests that there is possibly some other explanation, a mistake has been made, he’s met with angry retorts, “let it be, it’s over, we need to move on!” All seem content to let the guilt hang on Travis’s shoulders and perhaps, finally be done with the “Travis problem,” a bittersweet consolation. Something inside James will not let it go however, and doing some detective work behind the backs of others, especially the town Sheriff, and old high school teammate, he starts to retrace the events leading up to the tragedy, the timelines. He’s driven by a force that he doesn’t even recognize to get to the truth, a truth he knows is different from the one being hastily accepted in an effort to quickly get past the tragedy. He also knows that no healing will ever take place, real healing, if the ultimate truth is never revealed. Reconstructing the events and without a doubt in his mind, James determines that it would have been impossible for Travis to have started the fire. With evidence in hand, he goes to Travis and insists on the truth. Travis finally breaks down and gives in. It is revealed that a couple of teenage guys, friends of the farmer’s teenage daughter were there that night, goofing around outside the girls window, taunting her to climb down so they could all “hang out.” One of them innocently flicked a lit cigarette on the ground and dry hay quickly caught fire. But it was clearly an accident! Nonetheless, the boys panicked and ran as the fire quickly grew out of control, consuming the house and the family inside. Travis, bicycling home from a nearby town and a football game, witnessed the entire thing. He too knew that he could do nothing to stop the angry blaze. But what he could do is step in and take the blame so the poor teenage boys’ lives wouldn’t be ruined by what he knew to be only an accident. In the process he also figured this was a way to finally give the town what they want, an end to “the Travis problem.” The stories larger resolution however comes in the restoration of James’ faith. In Travis’s selfless act, James witnessed something that was truly “Christ like.” In today’s world, with all its difficulties, one person was willing to suffer so that another’s life, their soul could be saved. A simple act, yet one that would begin to rebuild his faith in God and man… Jim, reborn, returns to do his calling, although this time, staying in town, planting a seed that he would see to fruition.

Letter From Corbin

To my dear friends in Kipling,

It’s been some time since I visited you last, but please know I continue to work diligently on my promise to bring film production to your wonderful town. I know we were working together to make “3 Day Test” our first project and had worked hard for over a year to secure the necessary further funding to make that happen, but unfortunately, for one reason or another that never came to be. But as my parents always taught me, “perhaps its for a reason.” Well, I’m pleased to announce what I feel is the greater purpose in all this. First however, a small set up:

Early this summer my father passed away at the age of 82. It wasn’t sudden but nonetheless a shock to the system. Not long after, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer - she’s actually doing fine due to the miracles of modern medicine and the outlook is good. Well these two events, so close together, sent me on somewhat of a soul searching journey, specifically wanting to understand why God would test me in this manner. I spent the better part of the summer in somewhat of a haze.

Before all of this however, I had already been discussing with Kipling Film Productions the prospects of changing our first film to something that the money they had raised thus far could fully finance so we could get going. I laid out a story that still doesn’t have a proper title but for now I call “Seeds of Rust.” I summarize it below. With Kipling Film Production’s blessing I started on the script, which I had a “feel” for, but lacked the real juice to give it the heart I knew it deserved. Then the sad events of the summer happened and suddenly it all made sense. I became more personally involved in the story I wanted to tell. Since then, paper and pen have not had a moment’s rest. I’m blazing through the script and have never felt so positive about anything I’ve written… or the prospects for it. I’m writing in detail, using every corner of Kipling I can, diving deep into the goodness of the town, and all of you for inspiration. My plan is to, as with 3-Day Test, fully cast the movie with locals, with exception of a lead role that I will play. (We do need at least one recognizable so we can make some money!) All scenes will be shot in and around Kipling so I’m writing to that specifically as well.

My goal is to be done with script by the end of September, early October at the latest and then start shooting somewhere in November for several weeks. I’m writing the film with great scope and will continue to shoot specific scenes – on weekends perhaps – over the next six months so that I can capture all of the seasons and colors that Kipling has to offer. It is a project like no other, close to my heart on a variety of levels. It has a purpose now beyond making movies and simply bringing film production to Kipling. That will be accomplished, but at the same time we can also enlighten an increasingly turbulent world and show Kipling off as more than the town that just gave a house away in the Red Paperclip trade. We can show Kipling as a place where, if we all work together, we can overcome anything and ultimately help build a better society.

So, in short, while the calendar pages have been turning, please know that you have never left my heart and I am busy working hard to fulfill my promise to you. I think my father would be proud!

New updates on KFP coming soon. The script requires outdoor scenes to appear as late fall and winter; therefore summer shooting is unworkable. There was a joint decision by Angel Entertainment, Public Media Works, and Kipling Film Productions to postpone production until fall. This is a sound business decision.

People wishing to work on the set are required to attend Set Safety and Set Protocol classes. These will be rescheduled for the fall. Law, Major League) will be produced by Bernsen’s Public Media Works and Saskatchewan-based production company Angel Entertainment. The locally formed company, Kipling Film Productions will provide the funding.

According to the town’s mayor, the partnership is believed to be unprecedented in the industry, “This is thought to be a first in film, to have a community that works together to fund a [film] production,” says Mayor Kevin Hassler, “The film project is a huge opportunity to diversify to economic makeup of our community.”

Glenn Kuhn, who also sits on Kipling town council, chaired the steering committee to help get the project going.

“Right from the start we had a tremendous volunteer response from the community toward forming the company and raising the capital. As a town we want to do something about our future,” says Kuhn.

Not only will “3 Day Test” be shot on location in Kipling using the local hockey arena as a soundstage, a considerable amount of local talent will also be a part of the cast. An open casting call for Public Media Works in September of this year garnered several aspiring actors who will receive roles in the film, according to Bernsen

--more--

Mayor Hassler adds that mixing progressive ideas with small town values will make this and hopefully other film projects in Kipling a success. “The film industry is growing in this province and we have the unique opportunity of bringing that growth to our community. We will be different from other films, different enough that people will be intrigued and drawn to the end product”

###
<img
